Steering 1 - Rack and Pinion gears

The rack is the flat toothed gear that runs left to right.

The pinion is the small gear that is attached to the end of the streering rod.

When the teeth of the pinion gear meshes into the teeth on the rack as it moves it makes the streering rack move left or right which then moves the wheels of the vehicle.

See below for diagrams of the whole steering system and a 3D detail model of the rack and pinion gearing mechanisim.

Task 1: Use the attached worksheet to complete the tasks below

Using a ruler, paper, pencil and your best drawing skills take some time to draw and label the components found in the rack and pinion system.

Easy: Using the attached diagram label each part of the system

Medium : Draw out the system diagram in 2D as above and then label it

Hard: Use your 3D drawing skills to draw out the close up view of the rack and pinion

Task 2:

1: Watch the video above and make a note of anything that you are unsure about still.

2: Discuss any points you are unsure about with your collegues and tutor until you are able to explain the rack and pinion system clearly to a collegue.

3: Write a 2 or 3 sentence explanation of how a rack and pinion system works

Keywords: Rack, Pinion, gear, teeth,

Steering 2 - Rack and Pinion hydrolics

Task 3:

Using a ruler, paper, pencil and your best drawing skills take some time to draw and label the components found in the hydrolic rack and pinion system.

Easy: Using the attached diagram label each part of the system

Medium : Draw out the system diagram in 2D as above and then label it

Hard: Draw out, label and then explain the differences between the un powered and powered steering systems
